Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in UK even as workers lack taking precautions during lunch hour sun exposure.Eating lunch in the summer sunshine is considered as a treat by most of us office workers and we always look forward for lunch on a pleasant sunny afternoon. But according to a research by the health insurance team of Tesco Bank, the lack of adequate sun care protection during these lunch hours pose serious health hazards to the workers.
Majority of the British population is at the risk of grave skin diseases as only 10% of us apply sun cream before going out for lunch. The research also says that 16% of the Britons have got sunburns due to lack of precaution during the lunch hours. Most of us think that South England has got the most pleasant summers but what we do not know is that the workers in Newcastle are the ones mostly affected by the summer sun. Around 25% residents of Newcastle have got sunburns due to lunch hour sun exposure without any protection. When compared to second and third placed cities like Brighton & Hove and Portsmouth, 20% of office workers there are at the risk of the same threat. The results also show that a mere 7% office workers of Newcastle use sun protection cream when going out for lunch.
On an average 86% of us head out for lunch, around three to four times in a week, when the sun is out. Sunbathing has also become a favourite lunch hour pastime for many of us (15%). Around half the people who were questioned said that they think the sun in UK was less harsh than abroad. This throws light on why so many people do not take precautions while being exposed to sun, during their working days.
According to Tesco Bank’s Head of Health Insurance, Jeremy Sutton when it comes to health, prevention is always better than cure. He said that all of us enjoy having our lunch out in summer but it is important for everyone to know the risks of sun exposure, without having any protection, be it abroad or home. He also said that even single sunburn can have lasting effects on your skin.
